# Akiyoshido Cave

The cave runs more than 11.2 kilometers in total, the second longest in Japan, and is a designated Special Natural Monument. The path in passes through a cold stand of cedars before the mouth opens up. About a kilometer of it is open as a walking route. Formations along the way carry names: Hyakumaizara, Ogonbashira, Gankutsuo. An elevator partway along brings you out on the Akiyoshidai plateau at the karst viewpoint. Guided geo-tours can be joined on the day.

- Hours: Open every day of the year, including the new year holidays. Reception and closing are 9:00-16:30 for most of the year, 9:00-17:30 in the busy season (1 July-30 September), and 8:30-17:30 on set Golden Week and Obon dates (for 2026: 27 April-7 May and 8-16 August; these dates change each year). The Kurotani and Akiyoshidai information offices stop taking entries at 16:30 whatever the season. Groups can arrange in advance to enter outside these hours, between 7:00 and 18:00.

From Yamaguchi Ube Airport it is about 45 minutes by train to Shin-Yamaguchi, then the bus. By car, 5 minutes from the Akiyoshidai interchange on the Ogori-Hagi road. The two municipal car parks by the main entrance hold 200 and 300 cars at ¥500 per car per day, with a 2.5m height limit; the car parks at the Kurotani entrance (120 cars) and the lift entrance (150 cars) are free. Wheelchairs are lent free at the ground-floor desk of the Akiyoshidai Tourist Exchange Centre and can be reserved, but only part of the cave can be covered on wheels — check the map of the wheelchair-accessible area before you go.
