# Beppu Jigoku Meguri (Hells of Beppu)

These are hot spring sources rather than baths, named hells because the ground here was once impossible to approach. Umi Jigoku is cobalt blue and 98C. Chinoike Jigoku is boiling red clay, its steam red too, recorded as Japan's oldest natural hell. Tatsumaki Jigoku is a geyser, and a red lamp at the entrance means an eruption is close. Shirai Jigoku raises large tropical fish on spring heat. Those four are designated national scenic sites. Umi, Chinoike, Kamado and Oniishibozu have footbaths.
