# Kiyotsu Gorge Tunnel (Tunnel of Light)

The Kiyotsu gorge ranks with Kurobe and Osugidani as one of Japan's three great gorges. Its cliffs are bundles of columnar joints, hard rock but liable to crumble. A rockfall in 1988 closed the riverside path, and this 750-metre tunnel was opened in 1996 to replace it. In 2018 MAD Architects rebuilt it as Tunnel of Light. Past three viewpoints, the floor at the end holds a shallow film of water that flips the gorge upside down. There and back takes 30 to 40 minutes.

No regular closing day, but in winter it can close at short notice for snow. The entrance building (shop and cafe on the ground floor, foot bath upstairs) opens 9:00-16:00; the free foot bath runs April to November and stops for the winter, December to March. Car parks are shut 18:00-7:00.
