# Iwakuni White Snake Museum

The snakes are pure white with ruby-red eyes, up to 180 centimetres long, yet placid. The colour is thought to come from an albino mutation in rat snakes that hunted mice in rice stores. The first written record dates from 1738, after a flood. Their habitat was protected in 1924 and the snakes themselves became a national natural monument in 1972. Inside are skeleton models, a quiz game that earns children a certificate card, and an illustrated account of the snakes and the townspeople.
