# Itsukushima Shrine

The Great Torii is also a playground, reached on foot at a low enough tide. Tide pools on the way may hold tiny creatures; for one 8-year-old, hunting crabs and hermit crabs by the water beat the gate. Then there are the deer: a 2-year-old's favorite moment was watching one wade through the shallows. Back at the shrine, the roofed corridors hold enough to see and do that, for one 5-year-old, the visit never felt like a culture stop. So here, the sea sets the play.
