# Kiso Valley

The old road between Magome and Tsumago passes village houses and fields, with big bear bells set along the way. Ringing them becomes a game, one that kept a tiring 8-year-old going for one family. Midway, Ichikokutochi Tatebajaya, a free rest house, offers tea and toilets. Magome's sloping street is lined with snacks to eat as you walk, from grilled rice crackers to gelato. Tsumago is flatter and, for one family, quieter. Children may not care for the history, yet the bells, snacks and old shopfronts keep the day full.
