Hakone

Hakone is a hot-spring valley in the mountains west of Tokyo, reached from Shinjuku without changing trains. Getting around is the attraction: a switchback train, a ropeway over steaming vents, a boat across Lake Ashi. The open-air museum has sculptures children are meant to climb on.
