Yamaguchi is the end of Honshu, with sea on both sides. Akiyoshido, the largest limestone cave in Japan, stays cool all year along a wide lit path, and at Shimonoseki a pedestrian tunnel under the strait lets you walk to Kyushu.

A child of this age can walk the whole kilometer of the route on their own feet. The cave runs over 11.2 kilometers in total, the second longest in Japan, and is designated a national Special Natural Monument. There are guided geo-tours you can sign up for on the day, and the elevator partway along the route brings you out onto Akiyoshidai at the karst observatory.Entry and closing times are 9:00-16:30 in normal months, 9:00-17:30 in the busy season from 1 July to 30 September, and 8:30-17:30 on the Golden Week and Obon dates set each year (for FY2026: 27 April-7 May and 8-16 August). The cave is open every day of the year, the New Year period included. Admission runs on a seasonal sliding scale: normally 1,600 yen for high-school age and up, 1,300 yen for junior-high students and 850 yen for elementary students; 1,900 yen for adults in the busy season; and 1,350 yen for adults and 700 yen for elementary students in the quiet season from 1 December to the end of February.
They can walk the whole 193 meters of wooden bridge themselves, then ride the ropeway up to Iwakuni Castle on the hill. Bridge, ropeway and castle together make a 1.5- to 2-hour circuit. Down on the riverbed you can look up at the joinery - the iron bands and cramps that hold the arches together.If the castle is the plan, buy the set ticket (bridge, ropeway and castle; 970 yen adults, 460 yen elementary students) at the start - a bridge ticket cannot be swapped for a set ticket later. The ropeway runs 9:00-17:00 at :00, :15, :30 and :45, with the last car up and down at 17:00, and the castle closes at 16:45. The castle has no elevator inside and plenty of steps, so go up before legs give out.
The Mysteries of the White Snake is a hands-on and quiz-game corner covering how the snakes eat, how they move, what their scales do and the secret of their white bodies. Take on the game and you get a certificate card; answer everything correctly and you are certified first class. The shop sells a limited acrylic keyring of the local hero Seiryu Koshin Hakujao.Admission is free for preschool children, 100 yen for elementary and junior-high students and 200 yen for adults from high-school age. The white snakes are big — about 180 cm long and 15 cm around — but placid and gentle, and the museum's English page states that they are timid and pose no danger to people. Photographs are fine without flash. Open 9:00 to 17:00, with no regular closing day, though it closes occasionally for maintenance.
