When it opened in June 1971, this was Japan's first high-rise hotel, 170 meters (560 feet) tall, and by its own account the first in the country to run a wedding chapel.
The founding idea was a plaza for the city: a place with human warmth, where people meet and memories start.
The hotel says it took up barrier-free design, a nursing room and childcare early on, and in 2007 it put in a restroom for assistance dogs, the first in the hotel business to do so, designed with guidance from the Japan Guide Dog Association and other groups.

If you are traveling with a baby, the third floor is the one to know: the nursing room there has two private rooms, a tap that runs water at about 70°C (160°F) for formula, a microwave kept for baby food, and two changing tables.
Making a bottle, warming food and changing a diaper all happen in that one room, so none of them means moving to another floor.
Part of the lounge on the 47th floor is shoes-off, so your child can sit on the floor 170 meters (560 feet) above the city, and hotel guests can go up without a reservation.
From Shinjuku Station's west exit it is a 5-minute walk through the underground passage, and the hotel publishes a step-free route, so you can push a stroller all the way to the door without lifting it over a step.

- Ages 0-1The nursing room beside the Duet art lounge on 3F of the Main Tower is a dedicated 30-square-metre space themed a nursing room in the shade of trees, with two private booths for feeding and a wide porch at the entrance where a stroller can be parked. All four room types offered with the Happy Baby plan have a bathroom with a separate washing area, and with the loaned baby bath and its water thermometer you can bathe the baby exactly the way you do at home.The loaned baby cot is for children up to 10 months who are not yet pulling themselves up (some room types cannot provide one). The nursing room is open 10:00 to 21:00 and staff will accommodate you outside those hours. Inside are a formula tap running water at about 70 degrees, a microwave used only for warming baby food, two diaper changing tables, one changing bench, and a bin for used diapers. The bottle steriliser set, formula maker, baby bath and lidded diaper bin come with the Happy Baby plan and all must be reserved. Baby buggies are lent free of charge but stocks are limited, so the hotel advises reserving one. From Tochomae Station on the Toei Oedo Line, use exit A4, which has a lift, then it is about 300 m to the right at street level.
- Ages 2-3In summer the outdoor Sky Pool on 7F of the Main Tower opens free to hotel guests, and next to the 17.0 by 9.0 metre main pool there is a round toddler pool, 6.0 metres across and about adult-knee deep (in 2026, 4 July to 27 September, 9:00-20:00, last entry 19:30). Children's yukata are lent in sizes 100 to 140.The bed guard is for ages 1.5 up to 5, can be fitted only on the side, and cannot be fitted at the foot of the bed. The toilet trainer seat, step stool, high chair, puzzle mat and bed-wetting pad come with the Happy Baby plan and must be reserved. The main pool averages 1.2 m deep (1.05-1.28 m), and entry is restricted when it is crowded or the weather turns. The hotel's site does not publish rules on children still in diapers or on adult supervision in the pool, so families with infants should check with the hotel in advance. Preschoolers sleeping in a parent's bed rather than their own stay free, one child per adult.
- Ages 4-6SKY PLAZA IBASHO on 47F, the top floor of the Main Tower, spreads a 170-metre-high view across six zones, and part of it is a shoes-off area. Hotel guests may use it without a reservation. Children's meals are the kids' lunch at the all-day dining Jurin at 2,000 yen, the children's set at the Chinese restaurant Nanen at 3,800 yen, and the kids' plate at the Sky Lounge Aurora at 3,900 yen, with chairs and cutlery provided.The bed guard is for children under 5. Sleeping in a parent's bed is free for preschoolers only, one per adult and only when no extra bed is used; from elementary school age the adult rate applies, as the hotel has no separate child rate. On a plan that includes breakfast, children aged 6 and over are covered by the room rate, and a child sharing a bed eats free only when the adult takes the buffet. On a plan without breakfast it is 3,000 yen for ages 6 to 12 and free for 5 and under. The children's amenity set (toothbrush, about 20 cm slippers, mini handkerchief and sponge) and the yukata in sizes 100 to 140 are loan items and must be reserved.

From Shinjuku Station's west exit it's a straight 5-minute walk through the underground passage; with a stroller you use the A4 exit at Tochomae Station on the Toei Oedo Line, which has an elevator, then about 300 meters above ground.
