Matsue Castle's Edo-period keep is one of only twelve original keeps still standing in Japan, and one of the five that are National Treasures, along with Himeji, Hikone, Inuyama, and Matsumoto.
Walking from the main entrance at Otemae up into the keep and back down takes 40 to 50 minutes.
A major restoration was announced in May 2026, and admission was revised that July to help pay for it; the same revision made elementary and junior high students free, so only the adults in the group pay now.

The grounds are free to walk right up to the main enclosure, so whether to climb the keep is a decision you can leave until you are standing in front of it.
Shoes come off at the door and go into a bag, so kids climb the Edo-period floors in their socks.
There is no restroom inside and no elevator, and the stairs are steep, so use the restroom near the second gate on the way up: it has a baby bed, which gets the diaper change done before the climb instead of halfway through it.
If you need to nurse, ask the staff at the information office by the main gate and they will open a small room for you.

- Ages 0-1You do not have to climb the keep: the grounds from the Otemon gate up to Honmaru are free to walk. Honmaru opens at 8:00, half an hour before the keep starts admitting at 8:30, so you can be in early. A gravel detour takes wheels all the way up to the upper level of Ninomaru, though it is unpaved and the ride can get bumpy.For nursing, the Buratto Matsue tourist information centre lends a small room; it is on the right as you come through the Otemon gate, on the lower level of Ninomaru, open all year, and you just speak to the staff. The baby bed for diaper changes is in the restroom near the Nimon gate, on the upper level of Ninomaru. Inside the keep there is no elevator and no restroom, and the stairs are steep. From the upper level of Ninomaru up to Honmaru is stairs.
- Ages 2-3A toddler can walk the whole way from the Otemon gate up to Honmaru, and you only decide whether to climb the keep once you are standing there. On Saturdays the Matsue Jidai Annainin guides, in warrior costume, run set tours at 10:00 and 13:30 (paid).Under the fee revision of 1 July 2026, elementary and junior-high schoolers enter the keep free (adults 1,200 yen). The keep has no elevator, the stairs are steep, and you take your shoes off at the entrance and carry them up in a shoe bag. A web ticket lets you walk straight to the keep without queueing at the window. The Honmaru grounds themselves are free to enter. A three-site web ticket covering the castle, the Lafcadio Hearn Memorial Museum and the samurai residence is ¥1,760 for adults and ¥400 for children; a two-site ticket is ¥1,520 with children free. Both are valid for ten days including the day of purchase.source
