- Fee：The reconstructed street costs ¥330 for adults (15 and over), ¥100 for primary and junior-high pupils and ¥100 for those aged 70 and over; groups of 20 or more pay ¥260 and ¥80. Pre-school children are free, as are visitors with a disability certificate. A combined ticket covering the reconstructed street and the prefectural museum's permanent exhibition is ¥820 for adults 18 and over, ¥580 for high-school students, ¥240 for primary and junior-high pupils and ¥360 for those 70 and over; a combined ticket including a special exhibition costs a different amount. The rest of the 278-hectare site, and its parking, are free.■■■

Entry to the reconstructed street can be reserved through Jalan, which is for individuals in parties of 20 or under; groups of 20 or more book through the preservation society (0776-41-2330). Two guided options run in the ruins: a scheduled tour at 10:00, 12:00 and 14:00, up to 18 people at ¥500 each, about 60 minutes, every day except December to February, meeting at the sign by the south entrance ten minutes before; and a reserved guide for 1 to 45 people at ¥4,000, one to one and a half hours. The Asakura family ruled Echizen from here for five generations and 103 years, and the valley was called the Kyoto of the north. Digging began in 1967 and has gone on for over half a century; 278 hectares are now a special historic site. The reconstructed street is a 200-metre stretch of it, samurai residences on one side and craftsmen's townhouses on the other. The walls and foundation stones found in the ground carry the buildings, and the rooms are set out as excavation suggests.

By train it is the JR Etsumi-Hoku line from Fukui station to Ichijodani, then 15 minutes on foot; by bus, the Asakura-Eiheiji direct bus from the east exit of Fukui station stops at Fukugen-machinami itself; by car, 10 minutes from the Fukui interchange. Wheelchairs are lent free of charge at the reconstructed street, and the preservation society's office at its south entrance handles umbrella and bicycle loans - umbrellas are limited in number, and the five adult bicycles cost ¥500 plus a ¥1,000 deposit returned when you bring them back, though not in winter.
