Basics
- Fee：No admission fee is listed anywhere - the village is a place people live, not a site with a gate. What you do pay for is parking: ¥500 for a car, ¥1,500 for a microbus, ¥3,000 for a coach, free for a motorbike, cash on the day only. Those figures appear only on the Shimogo town tourism association's page, not on the village association's own site. One building inside charges separately: the Machinami Exhibition Hall, ¥250 for adults and ¥150 for children (¥200 and ¥100 for groups of 30 or more).■■■
- Hours：There is no opening time for the village itself. Every house is a shop and a home, and each keeps its own hours; the association only says that between 9:00 and 16:00 most shops are open. Weather or a family's own circumstances can close a shop or end its day early, and the association asks you to phone the individual shop to be sure. Winter changes things again: Kome-ya and Minato-ya want a reservation from December to March, Kimiya closes for those months, and Daikokuya, Matsukawaya and Matsumiya are shut on Thursdays. Do not treat one shop's closing day as the village's.■■

- Booking：Nothing needs booking to walk the street. The bus car park is first-come and takes no reservations. Individual houses are another matter: two of the soba places, Kome-ya and Minato-ya, ask for a reservation in winter (December to March), and the akabeko painting at Minatogawa-ya (0241-68-2939) asks you to phone first. A post town on the old Aizu-Nikko road, a national preservation district since 1981. The thatched houses are shops and homes at once, kept under a charter not to sell, lend or demolish. There are no opening hours; most shops are open from 9:00 to 16:00. Some close on Thursdays and some need a winter booking, so choose a second soba shop too. Parking is 500 yen for a car, cash on the day only, so bring it. The only shelter from rain is inside the shops.
