The museum sets the history of the Joban coalfield beside fossils dug from Iwaki. A plesiosaur, Futabasaurus suzukii, found by a local high-school student in 1968, greets visitors in the entrance hall. The mock pit tunnel is framed like a working mine and shows cutting methods in chronological order. Workshops making ammonite straps or amber accessories cannot be booked: sign up at the first-floor desk thirty minutes before a session. There is no restaurant inside, so bring food and eat in the free space behind the shop.
