The cave formed over about 300,000 years in the coral limestone of southern Okinawa, and the first 890 meters opened to visitors in 1972. Today the remaining stretch, more than 4,000 meters, is kept for research, where endangered bats and geckos still live.
With kidsThe part that matters
That walk is lit end to end, 890 meters through a cave of more than a million stalactites. It holds children right through, and an 8- and 9-year-old said the half hour felt like no time.
Above ground, Habu Park keeps vipers in open-topped tanks and one room where they roam, which children squeal their way past. The Ryukyu castle town has plaster shisa, Okinawa's guardian lions, to paint from 1,600 yen.
All of it sits behind one gate: a cave, live animals and something painted to carry home.

- Ages 0-1A baby travels in a carrier here, since the floor is wet and a stroller has to be folded and carried in places. One parent with a six-month-old walked it with the stroller and found the carrier far easier.
- Ages 2-3Two- and three-year-olds walk most of the way and enjoy it, though the second half often finishes on someone's back.
- Ages 4-6Five-year-olds can walk the whole cave, and one did it without a single complaint. The lighting is steady, though the darker stretches still felt a little scary to one five-year-old.

- Rainy dayRain does not reach the cave itself, much of the ground-level route is roofed, and the shows carry on under a large tent, so short of a downpour the day still works. Umbrellas are lent free, against a deposit that comes back.
- Hot dayThe cave sits at about 21°C all year, though the air is humid enough that the walk still brings a sweat. Long sleeves are not needed, even in August.

Before you go
- The cave is one way: from the ticket gate a long staircase drops underground, and an escalator brings you back up at the far end of the park, which is why the park's own order begins there. Decide at the gate whether to carry the stroller through, because one left at the entrance has to be fetched on foot later.
- Stairs and narrow passages inside mean a stroller gets folded and carried in places, and the floor is wet enough that babies are carried too, so a baby carrier is the lighter choice. There is no toilet inside the cave, and no nursing room or changing space until you are back above ground, so settle a diaper change and a feed before you go down.
- Last admission to the park is 16:00, and the craft workshops take their final booking at 16:30, though the glass workshop closes earlier.
- The shows run at set times, 10:30, 12:30 and 14:30 for Super Eisa and 11:30, 13:30 and 15:30 for habu and mongoose. Arrive well before the start, because a family who came two minutes ahead found the front seats gone and their five-year-old lost interest.
- Heavy rain can restrict entry to the cave, and an approaching typhoon can close the park, so check the day's notice before setting out.
