Mishima Skywalk

Save

A 400-meter pedestrian suspension bridge at the western foot of Hakone, above Mishima.

The center of its deck is open grating, so the ground 70 meters below stays in view the whole way across.

MoreWhat kind of place

The bridge opened in 2015 under the formal name Hakone Seiroku Mishima Ohashi, the great suspension bridge at the western foot of Hakone, and reached its tenth year in 2026.

At 400 meters it is a pedestrian-only span, held 70 meters above the valley by towers 44 meters tall, and its 1.6-meter deck was built wide enough for two wheelchairs to pass.

The sway is designed in on purpose, the operator says. Today the grounds also hold a hydrangea path of 205 varieties and 13,000 plants, usually at its best from mid-June to mid-July.

With kidsThe part that matters

That open grating is the draw, and the 400-meter deck sways as you walk, so the wobble itself thrills children.

Across the bridge, the wood-chip trail of Kicoro Forest turns walking into a stamp hunt, and the dinosaur maze is five minutes uphill.

The smallest get something too: Forest Adventure's Kids course opens at 90 centimeters, and Furokku's small-animal room will not bore a toddler.

Even so, most visitors stay one to two hours, and one father called the crossing alone reason enough to come.

By age0-1 / 2-3 / 4-6
  • Ages 0-1Babies this age mostly ride: a 1-year-old crossed in his grandfather's arms, then walked the far-bank trail himself, hunting for the Kicoro the forest is named after. Strollers can cross the bridge too, and the south gate lends them out free, though passing another one on the deck takes care.
  • Ages 2-3From 90 centimeters the Kids course of Forest Adventure opens up, and a father of a 3-year-old called it a course built for preschoolers. The dinosaur maze also starts at three and takes about 20 minutes.
  • Ages 4-6From 110 centimeters the Canopy course opens, though a child below third grade needs an adult climbing alongside. The place rewards a family that splits up: one father went round with his 5-year-old and his first-grader while his wife and their 2-year-old stayed among the animals, and a 4-year-old who likes high places crossed the bridge happily.
By weatherRain, heat, cold
  • Rainy dayThe bridge itself stays open in rain, though the grating underfoot turns slippery and the unpaved dinosaur forest turns to mud. A father who went in bad weather wrote plainly that Skywalk is a place for a clear day.
  • Hot dayEverything here is outdoors apart from the shops and cafes, and a family with a 5-year-old and a 1-year-old cut their August visit short in the heat. Salt tablets and cooling sheets were handed out on one hot August day, though in midsummer it is safer to plan for the crossing and little else.
  • Cold dayThe site sits on open ground in the hills, where wind is common and winter calls for real layers. One couple with a 1-year-old turned back partway across in December, so the athletics course and the cafe beyond went unvisited.
