An aquarium devoted to freshwater fish near Lake Yamanaka, run on spring water from Mount Fuji.
The side-view tank is a single pane of glass onto an outdoor pond, with tatami in front to lie down on.
MoreWhat kind of place
The aquarium opened on April 25, 2001 as a prefectural facility, and Yamanashi ran it directly until 2008; from 2009 it has been managed by the company Kikyoya under a designated-manager contract. 2026 marks its 25th anniversary, and at the end of February that year it had 106 species and 6,087 animals on display, with freshwater fish as its specialty.
With kidsThe part that matters
The side-view tank can be watched lying down: shoes come off at the tatami, and sturgeon and rainbow trout drift past at eye level.
At the center another tank holds thousands of fish in two rings, with a tunnel passing underneath. Low tanks sit on the floor, and every high one has a step.
At times doctor fish nibble your fingers, and upstairs (partly remade in July 2026) there are cameras you move to follow a fish. It is small, so a favorite tank can be seen twice.
By age0-1 / 2-3 / 4-6
- Ages 0-1At this age the big tanks do the work: one family's son, who had only just started walking, found the big fish easy to see and pointed at them in excitement. The tatami at the side-view tank takes babies who cannot walk yet, and on that family's 2019 visit the same boy happily toddled all over the wide wooden deck outside upstairs.
- Ages 2-3Two and three can go either way here: the corridors are dim, and one family's son of about two or three, visiting on a rainy day, worried that a crab would pinch him and in the end had to be carried by his father because he was scared. One family found that a touch-panel corner, where fish are learned on a screen, held a small child who could no longer stand still at a tank.
- Ages 4-6One family with a child this age found it more interesting than a building this small looks. This is the age for the drawing corner, listed as a place to draw a fish on a computer, and for the question box — write a question, drop it in, and a keeper's answer goes up on the board upstairs. Part of the upstairs, the microscope corner included, was remade as "Fujisui Lab" in July 2026, so check on the day what is there now.
By weatherRain, heat, cold
- Rainy dayRain changes little inside, because the main route is indoors, though rainy days in the summer holidays are the most crowded. The time you would have spent outside goes upstairs: the theater shows short films (new ones were announced for July 2026), and a 2019 account describes walking in and out freely and a shoes-off kids' space with fish soft toys and picture books, so check on the day what is there now.
- Hot dayHeat is when the building repays you: the tanks run on Fuji groundwater at about 12°C, cool enough to fog the glass, and the village itself sits high enough to be cooler than most of Yamanashi. Outside, the wading pool is filled from 70 meters down and holds 12°C all year.
- Cold dayCold changes the outside more than the inside, since the wading pool is a summer thing while the building is not. Winter weekday mornings can be nearly empty — one visitor on a winter weekday morning in February 2019 counted about five cars in the lot, though weekdays can also fill with groups — and on a morning like that a tank can be watched for as long as a child wants to stand in front of it.

Where to go next
Where it is
The address is 3098-1 Shibokusa, Oshino-mura, Minamitsuru-gun, Yamanashi, inside a park called Sakana Park.source
Before you go
- Eating and drinking are not allowed inside the building, and there is no restaurant in the aquarium or anywhere else in Sakana Park, so bring lunch — the building alone takes about an hour (one review site's tally has one to two hours as the most common stay), and you eat outside, where the park has table benches and vending machines.
- The aquarium is closed on Tuesdays (when a Tuesday is a public holiday it opens, and closes the next day instead), as well as over the year end (December 28 to January 1 in most listings; the official site gives December 30); from July 21 to August 31 it opens every day.
- The summer school holidays are crowded, rainy days more so, and weekdays can also fill with groups, though even in busy periods before 11:00 and after 15:00 stay calmer. When the parking lot fills you may have to wait to get in; the official top page links to the current crowd and parking status.
- No nursing room stands open: you ask at the reception desk and one is prepared for you, and it is not women-only: fathers may come in, except into the private booth. Inside there is no sink, no bin for used diapers and no hot water for formula, so carry a thermos and take the diapers away with you; a stroller will not fit in either, and waits at the door.
- If your child is going to play in the park's wading pool, a change of clothes is worth packing, and the day after rain the ground can turn muddy, so wet wipes for stroller tires earn their place.
- The fishing class is booked by telephone in advance, while the weekend backyard tour (first 10 per session) is signed up for on the day at the first-floor desk, and the feeding on the spot.
- Photography with a flash or a light is prohibited, because the fish are startled into the glass, and pets are not admitted (assistance dogs excepted).
