Matsushima, 40 minutes by train from Sendai, is a bay of some 260 pine-covered islands.
Its cruise boats loop around the bay in 50 minutes, leaving from a pier near Matsushima-kaigan Station, the stop for sightseeing.
MoreWhat kind of place
The bay is about 12 km from east to west and 8 km from north to south, and Zuiganji, the main temple, removed gravel from its approach for small children and wheelchair users, while the main street from Matsushima-kaigan Station got wider, flat sidewalks.
With kidsThe part that matters
The 50-minute cruise around the bay lets the family sit, and a 3-year-old spent it watching the scenery.
Out in open water, wind and sway on the rear deck amused an elementary-school child, though similar islands made that child sleepy partway.
Ashore, the see-through bridge to Godaido, a temple hall on an island, is narrow, so small children should hold hands. At Entsuin temple, a prayer-bead workshop starts with choosing your own beads. Cruise first, then loop out from the pier, to cut repeat walking.
By age0-1 / 2-3 / 4-6
- Ages 0-1A 1-year-old on an August 2026 cruise got sleepy, yet made it through the 50 minutes by going out on deck for the sea breeze. The windy upper deck felt dangerous to a parent whose 1-year-old wanted to walk, so they went back to their seats (September 2025); with a toddler who wants to walk, stay inside when the wind is up.
- Ages 2-3A 2-year-old (2 years 9 months) grew bored after two temples in a row, Zuiganji and Entsuin, and missed the bead workshop at Entsuin (October 2025), so if the workshop is your goal, visit Entsuin before Zuiganji or keep to one temple. In 2016, a 3-year-old turned back before the red bridge to Fukuurajima, an island, so the family never reached it; treat the island as a bonus, not the plan.

By weatherRain, heat, cold
- Rainy dayA mix of indoors and outdoors: Matsushima Rikyu has restaurants, a museum, and a craft workshop indoors, but there's more walking from the station than you might expect, so you'll get wet getting around on rainy days.
- Hot dayOn one summer-holiday visit, hats, drinks and rests were essential. Matsushima Rikyu, a complex that opened in 2020 on the former aquarium site, had a free water-play area (a big pool and a splash pond) during its 2026 summer festival, with an air-conditioned building next door, so check that the festival is on before you plan a day around it.
- Cold dayIt's windy along the waterfront, so parents suggest packing an extra layer for kids. The upper deck of the sightseeing boat is windy too.
How was it with your kids?

Where it is
The Tourist Association, inside the Rest House, is the area's reference point: Matsushima-machi, Miyagi Prefecture (宮城県松島町松島字町内98-1).source
Before you go
- - The nursing room in the Matsushima-kaigan Rest House (the cruise waiting hall, which also houses the tourist association's information desk) is normally locked, so ask the Matsushima Tourist Association staff to open it. Diaper changing is done in the multipurpose restroom in the same building, not in the nursing room, and there is no hot-water pot for formula. The room is open only during the association's business hours, and its pages give different closing times (April to November: 16:00 or 17:00; December to March: 15:30 or 16:30), so check first and arrive at least 20 minutes before closing.
- - You can book the cruise by departure time on the official site, but the booking only holds a slot: you still collect your ticket and pay at the counter, which took cash only. One blogger notes you can also board without a booking, and seats are first come, first served, with a line forming 25 minutes before departure on one visit; still, one Saturday's earliest open slot, the day before, was noon, so booking ahead may be safer on weekends.
- - Fares are 1,500 yen for adults and 750 yen for elementary-school children. Preschoolers were free in one trip report, another says a charge may apply depending on the number of guardians, and the official FAQ contradicts itself, so ask the operator (022-354-2233) before you buy. The upper deck cost 600 yen extra for adults and 300 yen for elementary-school children in an October 2025 report. It has stairs only, so you carry your child up (one family left the stroller on the lower deck, another folded it and carried it up); the lower deck takes a stroller.
- - Get off at Matsushima-kaigan Station, not Matsushima Station, which is about a 20-minute walk from the sights. The JR Senseki Line from Sendai takes about 40 minutes and 410 yen on trains bound for Ishinomaki, Matsushima-kaigan or Takajo; the line leaves from platform 10, which one traveler found far away and hard to follow, and trains that end at Shiogama or Tagajo need a change. Sources put the walk from the station to the cruise pier at 6 to 15 minutes, so allow extra time with children.
- - The tourist association says the boat and the main temples have no parking lots of their own (one trip report mentions parking at a lot for Zuiganji), so use a nearby pay lot (the Matsushima Park lots charge 300 yen for the first hour, then 100 yen per 30 minutes, from 8:00 to 18:00, capped at 1,000 yen) or the town's free lot, which has a steeply sloping approach. Lots were very crowded on the Sunday after Obon (the August holiday period), and the lots at Matsushima Rikyu fill up quickly during summer events, when the train is easier.
- - Bring a baby carrier even if you bring a stroller. The town describes the stone-paved temple streets as walkable with a stroller, but there was nowhere to leave a stroller at Godaido, one parent (children aged 4 and 6) warns that you must fold the stroller to cross its bridge, the paths inside Entsuin's grounds were hard to push along, and at Zuiganji, where the main hall is entered shoes off, one family left the stroller at the entrance and walked with a carrier. One trip report covering Sendai, Matsushima and Akiu counted nearly twice as many places needing a carrier as places where a stroller worked.
- - Some places close earlier than you might expect: shops began closing around 16:30 on one summer-holiday visit, and Zuiganji and the Date Masamune museum had closed earlier than one family expected, so check closing times first. Sea winds are strong, so pack one extra layer for children.
