Matsuyama Castle is one of only 12 Edo-era castle keeps still standing in Japan.
Its keep links to smaller towers, as at Japan's Himeji Castle, and sits on a hill with a ropeway and chairlift.
MoreWhat kind of place
Construction began in 1602 and took about a quarter century, on a hilltop where the main compound stands 132 meters above sea level. Today 21 of its buildings are nationally designated Important Cultural Properties, which is why the keep has no elevator; the buildings joined to the keep are all reconstructions from 1968.
With kidsThe part that matters
The ropeway and chairlift up the hill make the first ride: about 3 minutes by ropeway (every 10 minutes), about 6 by chairlift. The chairlift is for elementary school age and up and stops in rain.
Inside the keep (the main tower), you can try on armor, in child or adult sizes, when it is open. You can also hold a samurai sword to feel its weight.
A VR corner shows 360-degree video through goggles; in September 2023 it absorbed a whole family with first- and fifth-graders.
By age0-1 / 2-3 / 4-6
- Ages 0-1With a baby, the ropeway is the way up, and a stroller can ride it: on a day that was not crowded in 2018, a family was helped aboard by staff with the child still in the stroller. Strollers are left at the keep's entrance, so babies are carried inside, which a family with a 1-year-old found scary on the steep stairs.
- Ages 2-3The keep's steep stairs went differently for two families: a 3-year-old climbed them up and down alone in 2018, but a 2-year-old was carried up in March 2025, the descent felt scarier, and the parents skipped the top floor. Outside, a 3-year-old walked the hill path up and rested with a soft-serve at the upper station in April 2023, and exhibits on each floor kept a 2-year-old's family happy without reaching the top.
- Ages 4-6Preschoolers ride the ropeway, since the chairlift is for elementary school age and up, and the armor corner, when it is open, has child sizes. The official VR film in the ropeway station's second-floor booth is free, but only for ages 7 and up. A kindergartner in one family declared he would rather not be a lord if it meant climbing so many stairs.
By weatherRain, heat, cold
- Rainy dayThe keep is indoors, but the walk to it from the upper station is outdoors and left one visitor quite wet, and the chairlift does not run in rain, so go up by ropeway (which can also be suspended in severe weather). On one rainy September day in 2026, overseas visitors and tour groups overlapped and the castle was very crowded.
- Hot dayThe heat inside the keep depends on the day: it was crowded, stuffy and hot for one August visitor, while another felt a breeze through it in September 2023. Bring water, since the official walking guide tells visitors to drink often in summer.

Before you go
- The chairlift is not for little ones: it is a single seat for elementary school age and up, and it does not run in the rain, so preschoolers and rainy days both mean the ropeway.
- After the ropeway, it is about a 10-minute walk on stairs and slopes from the upper station (Chojagahira) to the keep entrance. One parent found pushing a stroller there possible but tiring (March 2025), and strollers do not go into the keep, where a stand near reception holds them.
- Inside the keep the stairs are steep, there is no elevator and there are no toilets, so use a restroom first, take shoes off at the entrance and be ready to carry small children. Toilets are beside the shop on the main plaza and west of the upper station.
- The nursing room and changing facilities found are at the foot of the hill; none are listed at the top: a locked single nursing room on the second floor of the ropeway station, with a changing table inside, plus a changing corner, a family restroom and borrowable strollers (first-come) at the same station. The official site lists no nursing room at the summit, and an August 2025 review said there is no hot water for formula.
- Allow about 1.5 hours for the ropeway round trip and the keep (about 1 hour at the least, rushed), and about 30 minutes from the station's first floor to the keep ticket desk (ropeway ride included). The ropeway runs 8:30 to 17:30 (to 18:00 in August, to 17:00 in December and January) and the chairlift 8:30 to 17:00 year-round, the keep is open 9:00 to 17:00 (to 17:30 in August, to 16:30 in December and January), and keep entry ends 30 minutes before closing. Tickets can stop selling earlier when it is crowded, and the keep closes on the third Wednesday of December.
- The keep costs 520 yen for adults and 160 yen for elementary students, and the ropeway or chairlift is 520 yen round trip for adults and 260 yen for children; preschoolers are free for the keep and the ropeway, up to two per adult (not with group discounts). A combination ticket (1,040 yen adult, 420 yen child) from the station machines, 8:00 to 14:00 only, skips the keep's ticket line, but the keep portion is non-refundable; the upper station takes cash only.
- Expect queues in peak weeks (the keep reached a 50-minute wait on May 4, 2026, in Golden Week), and treat the armor try-on as a bonus, since it can close for inspection or repair.
