Kurashiki Bikan Historical Area

A nationally designated historic district of white-walled storehouses and townhouses along the Kurashiki canal.

Its canal, once busy with rice trade, now carries river boats re-creating the Edo-period boats that hauled goods.

MoreWhat kind of place

The district began in 1642, when the shogunate took Kurashiki as direct territory and the canal bank became a rice trading hub. The city designated the area in 1969 and the national government selected it as a preservation district in 1979, and it now covers 21 hectares with more than 3 million visitors a year.

With kidsThe part that matters

The river boats come first: the ride takes about 20 minutes. Children under 5 ride free with a parent, and the prefecture's tourism site calls the bow the kids' best seat.

Swans live in the canal, and its carp hold small children's attention: one 3-year-old followed them along the bank. Pokémon manhole covers come in three designs, and a 1-year-9-month-old smiled each time she spotted one.

The canal itself, not any single attraction, keeps children busy, so it suits a slow stroll more than non-stop attractions.

By age0-1 / 2-3 / 4-6
  • Ages 0-1Bring a stroller: one family that left theirs at home carried a 1-year-old for most of the visit, and carrying the child, asleep, back to a parking lot a few minutes' walk away was harder than expected. In November 2014, another family's 1-year-old was delighted watching carp eat in front of the former Ohara family house, where carp food was sold at an unattended 100-yen stand.
  • Ages 2-3With a 2- or 3-year-old, a walk can take the place of a museum: a father with a child of about 2 skipped the Ohara Museum of Art and walked for about two hours, and another family's 2-year-old napped in a stroller, which gave their mother a quick run through the museum. The last room of the Momotaro Karakuri Museum is a haunted house that frightened a 2-year-old and a 5-year-old, though both made it out.
  • Ages 4-6A 4-year-old kept pace with the route, which his family found not too long, and climbed all the stairs of Achi Shrine on his own. Dinosaur models at the natural history museum thrilled a 5-year-old, but a 4-year-old girl was too scared to enter the haunted house at the Momotaro Karakuri Museum.
By weatherRain, heat, cold
  • Rainy dayThe river boat does not run in rain or strong wind, so plan around indoor stops such as the Kurashiki Archaeological Museum (a converted Edo-period rice storehouse, open 10:00–15:00, closed Monday to Thursday (open on holidays) and over the New Year period), the Ohara Museum of Art (a private museum centered on Western art, closed Mondays except on holidays and in the summer holidays) and cafés. Stone paving gets slippery when wet, so wear comfortable walking shoes.
  • Hot dayWillows shade the whole canal-side walk, and the official tourism site presents two free indoor spaces as cool places to rest: the second floor of Kurashiki-kan (the information office at the district's center) and the Kurashiki City Tourist Rest House. One family who went in the summer holidays found the Ohara Museum of Art cool enough to rest in while viewing paintings.
