Kouri is a small inhabited island off Okinawa, reached by car over a free bridge.
Kouri Beach, at the bridge's foot, has east and west sides you can walk between; the main beach is on the west.
MoreWhat kind of place
Before the bridge opened on February 8, 2005, a ferry ran between the island and Unten Port, and the bridge made it an island you can drive to.
Since then, the head of Kouri district said at the bridge's 20th-anniversary ceremony in April 2025 that tourists had increased, and traditional rites are still held on the island.
The island also appears on the Nakijin tourism association's English page, which presents it as the setting of an Okinawan version of the Adam and Eve legend.
With kidsThe part that matters
Kouri Beach has about 300 m of sand on its main western side, and the water stays shallow far out. A 15-month-old played in the water and sand until soaked.
At Kouri Ocean Tower, an observation tower, a self-driving cart lets children sit in the driver's seat, which delighted a 4-year-old.
Heart Rock, a heart-shaped rock, took one family with two school-age children 6 to 7 minutes from their parking lot, down a sandy stairway. Beach, cart and rock walk fit into one outing, and you will want a car.
By age0-1 / 2-3 / 4-6
- Ages 0-1A baby under one was puzzled by the feel of sand, so unlike the floor at home, on a summer three-day weekend. When a 7-month-old fell asleep in the car in April 2018, the adults in a family of five took turns going to see Heart Rock.
- Ages 2-3A 3-year-old niece was scared of the sea at first, but she gradually got used to it. On a 2016 visit, a 2-year-old still found the sea scary.
- Ages 4-6A 5-year-old who had wanted to drive the Ocean Tower cart got the driver's seat and was thrilled from the start. The tower's Shell Museum, with more than 10,000 shells, is neatly laid out but did not reach that family's children, aged 5 and 11.
By weatherRain, heat, cold
- Rainy dayKouri Ocean Tower can be enjoyed in light rain, with an indoor viewing floor and an outdoor rooftop deck that can close in bad weather.
- Hot dayThe tower's indoor floor offers a cool view, which one midsummer visitor was glad of. At the beach, a parasol rents for 1,000 yen and a summer chair for 500 yen.
- Cold dayOne January visitor found the wind strong even on a clear day, and a family of six to nine could not stay long on the beach. In early April, another family found it too cold to swim, so they only dipped their feet.

Before you go
- Public transport to the island is thin, so plan on a car. In March 2023 a writer counted just three buses a day to the island, the Yanbaru Express (the long-distance bus from Naha Airport) does not connect with arriving flights, and one 2022 stay found no bus back to the main island. By car, the bridge is about 1 hour 30 minutes from Naha Airport on the expressway and about 2 hours on local roads.
- The bridge is free to cross, but it can close for events or typhoons, so check before you go. Free parking lots at both ends let you leave the car and walk across; a full crossing on foot takes over 20 minutes, so about 500 m out and back is suggested.
- Parking at Kouri Beach is free, though listings disagree on the number of spaces (150 in one, about 30 plus 80 in another). In summer the beach fills with swimmers: on the Saturday morning after Obon (the mid-August holiday week), one visitor found the beach parking full and saw a long Ocean Tower queue from the car. After Japan's elementary-school summer holidays ended, another family found the beach quiet.
- Swimming at Kouri Beach is free, from late April to mid-October, 9:00 to 18:00. The jellyfish net and lifeguards run only about June to October, and the shower costs 100 yen, though the price may change.
- From the Heart Rock parking lot to the beach, you go down a sand-dusted path and, at the end, a steep stairway; the sand is slippery even where there are handrails, so sandals with a heel strap felt safer than flip-flops. One family with two school-age children found the way back up slower and more tiring, and a grandmother with a bad leg could not go all the way. Tiinu Beach itself, where the rock is, has no toilet or shop, and the quiet northern beaches have no facilities or lifeguards. Paid lots near it run about 100 to 300 yen an hour, and the free ones are few and a little hard to find. One visitor's paid lot had a free toilet, a 100-yen shower and a shop, and another writer's lot had a shop, a toilet and a foot-washing area.
- Inside Ocean Tower there is no toilet; one family with a 5-year-old and an 11-year-old hurried down from the 3rd floor. The family restroom, with a diaper-changing table, stands outside between the tower and the gift shop, and there is no nursing room. Admission is listed at 1,000 yen, hours are 10:00 to 18:00 (last entry 17:30; check the official site), and the cart ride takes about 8 minutes. Strollers can be borrowed free at reception, but a baby carrier is advised because of the cart, and the top deck is reached by stairs only.
- The island has no convenience store, and one 2022 visitor found only a few small places to eat, so buy what you need before crossing. Near Kouri Beach there are a shop, a souvenir store, toilets and showers. Kouri Island Station Sorahashi, a complex with a food court and local goods, stands just left of the bridge's far end.
