A national park on a World Heritage peninsula, home to an estimated several hundred brown bears.

Its Five Lakes in primeval forest have a free elevated boardwalk, fenced against bears, that anyone can walk to the first lake.

MoreWhat kind of place

Shiretoko became a World Natural Heritage site on July 17, 2005. The peninsula is about 70 km long, and its road covers only about three quarters of that.

Also, the Five Lakes' ground trail is now entered by certification; in 2007, before that system, bear closures left all the ground trails usable on only 98.5 days.

With kidsThe part that matters

The elevated boardwalk at the Five Lakes has no steps, runs 800 m each way and has an electric fence against brown bears. Children enjoy it: a 6-year-old asked to walk it again.

On a cool summer day, a girl who usually begs to be carried mostly walked herself. The Shiretoko Nature Center, 9 km from the lakes, shows a 20-minute film on a 20 m by 12 m screen (KINETOKO), free for preschoolers. So the boardwalk and the film cover a dry day and a rainy one.

By age0-1 / 2-3 / 4-6
  • Ages 0-1The boardwalk suited a family with infants on a long holiday in 2023, with benches and tables near the Park Service Center spaced widely enough to park a stroller beside them. With breaks, that family allowed 90 minutes at most.
  • Ages 2-3In September 2018 the ground trail's lecture was a video with a threatening brown bear, quite scary even for adults: a 3½-year-old was frightened by it, would not get down from her father's shoulders, was carried to the end and fell asleep right after. Her parent still judged the small loop's path, part dirt and part boardwalk, walkable for a 3-year-old outside bear season (in bear season, a preschooler may not be accepted on a guided tour at all: see the ground trail rules below).
  • Ages 4-6Allow about 1½ hours rather than the 40 minutes posted: a round trip on the boardwalk with a 6-year-old in May 2025 took that long with stops at the lookouts. A parent who has visited four times thinks children can enjoy Shiretoko fully from age 4 to 5.
By weatherRain, heat, cold
  • Rainy dayOn a rainy day, the Shiretoko Nature Center offers a film on its big screen, indoor displays and staff talks. In thick fog, one visitor in June 2026 could barely see anything from the boardwalk, so the film is the better plan for that day.
  • Hot dayNot checked yet
  • Cold daySplit the day between the car and the inn: in November 2025 it was cold enough for flurries and outdoor activities were hard with 3-year-old twins, so that family took in the scenery by car and played at their inn in Utoro. The inn's kids' space, with a ball pool and a slide, was almost private on a Friday and Saturday.
