A two-stage ropeway climbs to a 2,156 m summit observation deck in the Northern Alps.

The second ropeway is Japan's only two-story gondola, and the summit has a rooftop deck with 360-degree mountain views.

MoreWhat kind of place

The ropeway opened on July 15, 1970; the second ropeway became a two-story gondola in 1998 and was renewed in 2020 with Austrian-built cars, and total riders passed 18 million in 2021. Itadaki no Mori opened in 2024, and the rooftop deck reopened in July 2025 as "AlpScape" with a new wooden deck.

With kidsThe part that matters

That rooftop deck is the main view. Beside the top station, an outdoor nature area called Itadaki no Mori adds boomerang-shaped decks jutting toward the peaks, a forest path and table benches.

Indoors, the Ropeway Lab next to the Panorama Lounge (a place to sit and rest) has a window onto the real pulleys as they move.

Stations can hold a toddler's attention: in November 2021 one 1-year-old preferred watching the ropeway at a station to riding it. So a small child has plenty to watch, from peaks to machinery.

By age0-1 / 2-3 / 4-6
  • Ages 0-1Babies are not excluded (there is no age limit), but the quick climb calls for care about air-pressure changes, and a baby-focused site suggests from about 4 months. A family with a 1-year-old spent about 3 hours in all, rides included (November 2021), and their son touched snow for the first time outside the top station.
  • Ages 2-3Not checked yet
  • Ages 4-6Keep to the summit's walking paths, which are well kept for ordinary visitors; the trail beyond is mountain climbing. A 5-year-old hiking with his parents and two older brothers in summer 2021 reached his limit partway along it and turned back, because pushing on would have meant not getting back to the ropeway.
By weatherRain, heat, cold
  • Rainy dayA listing site marks it as fun even on rainy days, though strong wind can stop the ropeways. On a rainy, all-white day in September 2025, one visitor suggested letting a run go by and relaxing at Shirakabadaira Station, which has a bakery and the View Lounge.
  • Hot dayThe summit is about 6 to 10°C cooler than the bottom station, and the official site calls it a "sky retreat from the heat" (the August average there is a 19°C high and a 17°C low). Bring a long-sleeved layer even in summer.
  • Cold daySnow can fall from mid-November to early April, and the top station can feel colder than you expect; one late-November afternoon at 3 p.m. it was minus 6°C. From December to April a "snow corridor" forms around the top station, with snow walls 3 m high.
