Chichibu Shrine is Chichibu's guardian shrine, said to be over 2,100 years old.
Buildings from 1592 carry carved tigers and monkeys, and water fortune slips show their words when dipped in the stream.
MoreWhat kind of place
Chichibu Shrine is the area's guardian shrine, with a history put at more than 2,100 years, and the present buildings were donated by Tokugawa Ieyasu in 1592. Today it is best known for its December night festival, part of the float festivals registered by UNESCO in 2016.
With kidsThe part that matters
Water fortune slips are what children enjoy most here. The paper looks blank until it is dipped in the little stream beside where the slips are kept, and then the words rise up.
Children's slips cover topics from health to play; a 7-year-old who chose the glass-bead charm slip clipped the charm onto a bag, delighted.
Carvings such as a tiger playing with a cub held one family's elementary-school children for one to two hours. Yet the grounds are not large, so the visit stays easy.
By age0-1 / 2-3 / 4-6
- Ages 0-1Prayers for a baby's first shrine visit (omiyamairi) are taken from 5,000 yen at the amulet office in front of the main hall, and at the shrine's first-birthday ceremony (a prayer applied for at that office), your child's handprint is taken and given to you as a growth record.
- Ages 2-3Not checked yet
- Ages 4-6Open the paper before dipping it: a 5-year-old in January 2023 who chose a children's slip dipped it still rolled up, and no words appeared.
By weatherRain, heat, cold
- Rainy dayA family visiting in heavy rain in September 2024 stayed almost dry, because the free parking is close to the shrine.
- Hot dayIn summer, mist falls from pipes in the trees above the fortune-slip stream, and a hot day in May was comfortable under the mist too.
- Cold dayAn indoor rest area lets you warm up on cold days, and for New Year 2026 the shrine said the main hall's windows would be opened for ventilation, so it asked you to dress warmly.

Before you go
- - Water fortune slips can run out: a visitor in August 2023 came for them and found them sold out, so treat them as a bonus rather than a promise. The slips are kept beside the amulet area (fudasho) and you choose them there; the official site says 300 yen, put in the offering box before you draw, while one personal blog says 200 yen, so check the price.
- - The carvings were under repair from 2019. A four-year renovation of the main hall began in July 2019 and hid them for part of that time, and in July 2023 a visitor found the owl carving covered for construction work, and in April 2021 another visitor could not see the Genki Sanzaru (three monkeys), which was under repair. The sources do not show today's state, so check recent photos before you promise children the tiger, and note that explanations of the carvings were in Japanese only in a 2018 account.
- - The toilets are outside the buildings: a January 2026 visitor found private stalls that a parent and child can enter together, while a March 2025 visitor found them hard to locate. The city-run family restroom in the grounds is open around the clock and has a baby-only diaper changing table, but no baby chair. A wheelchair-accessible toilet is also inside the Heisei-den hall, behind the cafe space, and another is in the toilet building beside the festival-float storehouse (yatai-ko) near the west gate.
- - Stone steps lead to the main gate, and a ramp to its right bypasses them; the ramp is described for wheelchairs and strollers are not mentioned. At the large torii gate in front, the sidewalk breaks off and the road curb has a step of about 5 cm. The west gate has no step, and you can go in and out of the crushed-stone parking lot from it.
- - Crowds: the December 2–3 night festival draws more than 200,000 people, and a tourism listing recommends public transport. On December 3, 2024, the night festival day, the grounds were packed with worshippers and onlookers, with three large floats gathered there, and one visitor stayed over three hours. For New Year 2026, the shrine capped prayers at 18 groups per 30-minute slot, and a full slot sent you to the next; one family avoided the crowd by visiting at year-end and found few people.
- - Entering the grounds and worshipping are free, and prayers start at 5,000 yen. Applications for prayers and worship are taken daily from 9:00 to 16:30 (at New Year 2026 the shrine used set 30-minute slots instead, 8:30 to 16:00 on January 1–3). Listings differ on gate hours (5:00 to 20:00, winter from 6:00, or 6:00 to 20:00, which varies, as of February 2026), and the shrine does not publish when you may enter. The amulet office is listed as 9:00 to 17:00, yet in April 2021 its doors were closed at about ten to five.
- - Chichibu Station (Chichibu Railway) is a 3-minute walk away; Seibu-Chichibu Station, where the Seibu limited express from Ikebukuro ends (about 80 minutes, no transfer, all seats reserved), is 15 minutes on foot by the shrine's count and 10 by the city's guide. Seibu-Chichibu Station and Chichibu Station are different stations, about 1 km apart on different lines (one parent's account). Free parking is on the east and west sides, though a July 2023 visitor found the grounds' lot small, fitting only a few cars, while an April 2022 review says a coin parking lot is very close by. On a day with event traffic controls, as in February 2019, the shrine's lot was unreachable.
