Sumaura Sanjo Yuen is a hilltop amusement park in Kobe, reached by ropeway from the station.
Its Carlator, a rattling two-seat car that climbs a 25-degree slope, is said to be the last of its kind in Japan.
MoreWhat kind of place
The ropeway opened in September 1957 and the revolving tower in 1958, followed by the chair lift in 1959 and the Carlator in 1966, which turned 60 in March 2026. The Carlator is said to be the only one left in Japan, and the park has recently drawn more young visitors and a steady stream of foreign tourists.
With kidsThe part that matters
The Carlator is the ride children get most excited about, rattling up 91 meters in about 2 minutes 20 seconds. The cycle monorail, a two-seat bicycle on a rail 3 to 8 meters above the ground, is another hit.
Mini Car Land has ride-on cars themed on F1, Anpanman (a Japanese children's hero) and Hello Kitty, some big enough to share with a parent. One family's children climbed lion and deer figures for 30+ minutes (2025).
Expect gentle rides and little play equipment, so look elsewhere for a big playground.
By age0-1 / 2-3 / 4-6
- Ages 0-1Past the ropeway the hill is steep with many steps, so a baby carrier suits better than a stroller; the game corner on the tower's 2nd floor has a kids' corner for small children.
- Ages 2-3Ages 2 to 3 are the most common among visiting children, according to Jalan, a Japanese review site. The old-fashioned kids' rides inside the tower can absorb a toddler (one 3-year-old rode them happily), but parts of the day tired him, and his parents are saving the chair lift for when he is older.
- Ages 4-6The ball pool in the tower's game corner on the 2nd floor is for preschool children only, and children aged 1 to 6 are free, one per ticket holder.
By weatherRain, heat, cold
- Rainy dayMost of the fun is outdoors, but the Carlator runs inside a roofed, walled track, and the revolving observation tower has three indoor floors: a free rest area, a game corner and a rotating café.

Before you go
- - Mini Car Land and the cycle monorail close on weekdays in the quiet season, so check the official website before a weekday visit; each ride costs 300 yen (per person on the monorail).
- - The park is closed on Tuesdays, except national holidays (the English page adds the summer vacation period). Hours are 10:00 to 17:00 but vary by ride: the Carlator runs 10:10 to 16:50, the chair lift 10:20 to 16:40, the tower rooftop 10:10 to 16:20, and the café takes last orders at 15:30, so arrive in the morning. All hours can change without notice by season, for example on New Year's Day and in cherry blossom season.
- - Past the ropeway the hill is steep with many steps and no ramps, and about 70 steps lead up to the ropeway boarding area. A folded stroller can ride the ropeway, but many visitors leave strollers in the storage area beside the lower station, so a baby carrier is the easier way to bring a small child; the park also asks you to wear shoes that do not slip. One father who visited with a first-grade son in February 2024 wrote that a stroller is no use past the ropeway and a baby carrier is a must for small children.
- - The chair lift is a swing-like single seat about 2 meters up, and you hold the bar on the right. Children aged 3 and over ride alone; under 3, an adult can take them using a baby carrier (the park lends carriers up to age 2 and asks you to bring your own if unsure). A child too small to ride alone cannot use it, and the park points them to a hiking path of about 10 to 15 minutes to the Harima-station side. A 2023 visitor noted a height limit on the lift, without giving the figure. One mother said timid small children may hesitate at first.
- - Plan nursing and diaper changes around the revolving tower: the nursing room is in its 2nd-floor game corner, which also has a kids' corner for small children. The park map marks a nursing and diaper-changing room beside the toilets in the tower (a map symbol that does not show the floor) and a diaper-changing symbol beside the toilets at the putting course near the playground, but none at the toilet next to the ropeway's top station.
- - The ticket window at the ropeway's lower station is the only place that takes cashless payment; everywhere else is cash only. Course A (ropeway, Carlator, tower, chair lift) is 2,100 yen for adults and 1,600 yen for children aged 6 to 12, and Course B, without the lift, is 1,500 and 1,000 yen. Children aged 1 to 6 are free, one per ticket holder. The cycle monorail, Mini Car Land and the small playground are at the far end of the chair lift, so choose Course A if you want them without the 10 to 15 minute hiking path.
- - You may bring your own lunch and eat it in the tower's 1st-floor rest area, which has tables and chairs. The hands-free barbecue in front of the tower needs a booking by 3 p.m. the day before (by 3 p.m. the day before that if the day before is a closed day) and allows no outside ingredients.
