North of the main hall there is a lawn where, in good weather, you can settle down on the grass. It is a quiet place with the Shinjuku high-rises behind it, and the North Pond beside it has ducks, mandarin ducks among them. The Hatsumiyamode prayer for a baby needs no reservation if you come as a family.From each entrance it is about a ten-minute walk each way to the main hall over a path laid with gravel; the shrine's own Q&A notes that visitors from abroad find it curious that the path is deliberately made harder to walk on. The Minami-shinmon gate at the front has a raised threshold beam that you step over rather than on. For a prayer service you fill in a form at the entrance to the Kaguraden on the day; only the special prayer services, from 100,000 yen, are by reservation. The traffic-safety amulet sticker can be put on a stroller as well as on a car.
You can push the stroller all the way to the 46th floor. The elevator up from 14F, the Transition Pod, travels through ceiling-wide imagery and three-dimensional sound. Out onto the roof you go in a baby carrier, which the observatory itself recommends. The Cloud Hammock up there is, in their own words, a rest area for lying back and watching the sky.On the roof, riding on shoulders or carrying a child in your arms is asked against as dangerous — for entering, viewing and moving alike — and a baby carrier is what they recommend. Your own stroller cannot go up to the roof, and the loan stroller is for children who can sit up unaided, up to 18 kg. Bags cannot go up either, so leave them in the dedicated lockers on 46F. There is one nursing space only, in the Baby Room on 46F, which also holds two changing tables and a formula-water warmer. There is no re-entry, so it helps to stop first at the building's own Baby Room on 13F (10:00-23:00, three nursing spaces, four changing tables). Children 5 and under enter free.
