Maeda Harunaga, the eleventh lord of the Kaga domain, founded the shrine in 1794 beside the spring Kinjo Reitaku, as the guardian shrine of the domain school Meirindo, and enshrined Sugawara no Michizane there. Ordinary people could not pray here until 7 May 1874, the day Kenrokuen opened to the public, and the vermilion worship hall and main sanctuary are now listed as national cultural property.

A paper fortune called mizumikuji shows its letters the moment it is dipped in the temizuya water basin. The basin is filled from the shrine's own well, which shares its source with the spring Kinjo Reitaku.
Two more things are made to be touched: Yumeushi, an ox statue stroked for a wish, and Ibotori-ishi, a stone rubbed for warts. The stone sits by a large lotus pond, and a small arched bridge crosses the stream feeding it. About fifteen minutes covers the visit. Little here is only to look at.

- Ages 4-6The deity is Sugawara no Michizane, the god of learning, and a Kangakusai study rite is held at 11:00 on the 25th of each month for 1,000 yen a person.

- Rainy dayThe hiroen, the wide veranda of the worship hall, is reached with shoes still on, so getting out of the rain costs no wrestling with small shoes.
- Hot dayThe basin water is pumped from the shrine's own well around the clock and tested every year to confirm it is drinkable, and a cup is left beside it.
- Cold dayOn 15 January the Sagicho bonfire burns in the grounds from 8:00, and the fire is put out at 14:00.

Before you go
- There is no toilet anywhere inside the shrine grounds, and the nearest one is at the parking lot of Gokoku Shrine, about three minutes on foot.
- The nearest changing table is inside Kenrokuen, about 230 meters away, and Kenrokuen charges admission.
- The office closes one or two days a month, which stops blessings, the charm counter, goshuin stamps and the telephone, though the worship hall stays open; check the news page of the official site for the dates before you go.
- The charm counter and blessing reception run 9:30–17:00, and the last reception for a blessing is 16:30.
- Online booking for a blessing closes two days ahead and is in Japanese only, so the day before and the day itself have to go through the phone on 076-261-0502, 9:30–17:00.
- The shrine has no parking lot, and in October and November the roads and the prefectural parking lots around it are heavily congested.
- Coming up on foot from the station side means a steep slope, and there are steps in the grounds, although they are not long; from inside Kenrokuen, the Zuishinzaka gate exit puts you at the shrine straight away.
