21st Century Museum of Contemporary Art, Kanazawa

Save

A contemporary art museum ringed by lawn, with fourteen galleries no two alike.

Look down into Leandro Erlich's Swimming Pool and the water is real, but the room beneath it is dry.

Note: a paid nursery room next to the Kids Studio takes children from 3 months to preschool age by advance booking (¥500-800 per child per hour, depending on age and day).

Basics

Fourteen galleries differ in size, height and shape; a ticketed exhibition zone and a free public zone share the building. Leandro Erlich's Swimming Pool holds real water over a sheet of glass, above a room you can walk into. Outside on the lawn, Fernando Romero's Wrapping is a pavilion children can climb inside. Twelve tuba-shaped horns nearby are linked underground in pairs, so a voice sent into one surfaces somewhere unexpected. A kids' studio and an art library with picture books are indoors.
