The park opened in 1970, while Okinawa was still under American administration, as a project marking its return to Japan. Money for it was raised across the country. The zoo keeps about 150 species, and names the wildlife and farm breeds of the Ryukyu arc as its priority. That arc is the two hundred or so islands strung between Kyushu and Taiwan. Lions live on two levels either side of a rocky hill. Indoors, the Wonder Museum runs on things children touch, including a popular ball coaster.

- Fee：¥1,000 for age 16 and over; free for age 15 and under; ¥500 for students (high school, vocational school, university) on showing a student ID. Annual passports are ¥4,000 / ¥2,000.
