A hot spring town of hotels and inns along the Kinugawa gorge in Nikko, Tochigi.
The steam locomotive SL Taiju is turned around on a turntable outside the station, free to watch at its set turntable times.
MoreWhat kind of place
Kinugawa Onsen was discovered in the Edo period (the samurai era) and, because it lay on Nikko temple land, was used only by daimyo (feudal lords) and monks returning from Nikko pilgrimages, before opening to the public from the Meiji era on. Once called Tokyo's "back parlor" alongside Hakone and Atami, it still draws over 2 million visitors a year, though some large inns have closed and left ruins on the riverbank, which the town is clearing.
With kidsThe part that matters
The turntable sits in the station plaza, where anyone can watch it turn for free at set times, which can differ from the SL's arrival. The plaza is wide enough for kids to run around.
One family blog mentions days when monkeys from the Nikko Monkey Troupe came to perform. A free footbath, Kinuta-no-Yu, is a minute's walk away.
A 140 m suspension bridge, a 12-minute walk from the station, leads on to Furugama Falls (about 5 minutes) and a lookout (about 10).
By age0-1 / 2-3 / 4-6
- Ages 0-1Carrying suits the walks: in a 2013 account a 1-year-old crossed the suspension bridge on a parent's back, and a family with a 1-year-old and a 7-year-old found a carrier alone enough on the bumpy bridge-and-slope walk. Kinugawa Onsen Hotel let a 1-year-old still in diapers into its public bath (February 2025 stay), where the family filled a baby bath with hot water.
- Ages 2-3Tobu World Square suits this age: trains run inside the miniatures, the park is wide enough for kids to run, and a 3-year-old and a toddler in a 2013 account enjoyed the cards that set the miniatures moving. In a January 2020 record with a 2-year-old, a walk to Furugama Falls had a park on the way and a slope to play on, though the writer found the falls smaller than expected.
- Ages 4-6Beyond the town, Nikko Edomura theme park has a paid shuriken-throwing dojo with shorter targets for kids and a costume parlor that turns them into samurai, princesses or ninja. The giant outdoor maze Paradium averages about 45 minutes and gives juice for finishing within 25, and the Grande Isola kart circuit takes ages 4 and up at 110 cm or taller.
By weatherRain, heat, cold
- Rainy dayTwo stops on the Nikko tourism association's list of family outings near Kinugawa Onsen work in rain: Trick Art Pia Nikko, an indoor attraction where you can touch the works and take photos, and Nikko Hana Ichimonme, whose main building is a greenhouse with a 15-minute gem hunt in a sandpit.
- Hot dayBuild in a cool-down: Tobu World Square, a nearby park of world landmarks at 1/25 scale, has little shade, and an August visitor rested in an air-conditioned rest area. Kinugawa Onsen Hotel's indoor pool is free for guests, and in 2025 it ran from July 18 to September 28, 15:00 to 19:00.
- Cold dayCold days have warm stops: Tobu World Square has small huts marked "heating" that one January visitor found useful, and a towel made the free footbath by the station more comfortable on a cold late-March day.

Where to go next
Where it is
Kinugawa Onsen is a gorge-side hot spring town in the upper Kinugawa valley, in Nikko, Tochigi (this describes the whole town, not a single street address).source
Before you go
- The SL turntable is free to see from the station plaza, but the time the engine rolls onto it can fall well apart from the train's running time, so check the operating days and times before building it into your plan.
- On a winter weekday, dinner can be scarce: a family with 3- and 4-year-olds who arrived on a Wednesday in late March 2026 found almost nowhere serving dinner and fewer places that took children, and suggests a plan with dinner included. In August, a family with a stroller found the station cafés and rice-bowl shops crowded and chose a roomier soba and udon shop.
- The bus to the hotels leaves from stop 5, just right of the station exit, and, per a 2016 blog, takes strollers folded onto a seat; fares were reported at 190 yen for adults and 100 yen for children (2016 and 2019 sources), while a 2025 guide lists 300 yen, so check. Kinugawa Onsen Hotel has no station shuttle, and walking to it takes about 30 minutes on a narrow road with traffic, which one writer advises against with children; Nikko Kinugawa Hotel Mikazuki, by contrast, is in view of the station and, by one visitor's feel, a 1-to-2-minute walk.
- Nearby attractions close on set days: Nikko Edomura on Wednesdays (open on holidays), the Paradium maze on Thursdays (open in March, August and on holidays), and the Kinugawa Onsen ropeway, a cable car to a monkey area, from March 1 to 15 each year.
- Buses to Tobu World Square and Edomura run about every 30 minutes by a 2025 guide, yet one family in 2022 took a taxi (about 2,100 yen) when the times did not suit them; a one-day bus pass for the route between the station, Shin-Takatoku, Edomura and Hana Ichimonme costs 820 yen for adults and 410 yen for children.
- Past the suspension bridge, the path to the falls and lookout is stairs and slopes; one family folded the stroller and carried the baby, and another left it at the foot of the steps. Crossing the bridge takes about 5 minutes one way to Furugama Falls and about 10 to the lookout. One writer found the bridge, lookout and falls together tiring and recommends only the falls if you choose one. Fureai Bridge, another bridge in town, has steps too, so with a stroller check the map for a detour.
- Ask when you book: Kinugawa Onsen Hotel set up a diaper bin and a step stool on request, while Nikko Kinugawa Hotel Mikazuki lends baby baths and diaper bins in limited numbers, had no stroller loan in February 2026, does not offer free diapers, and in February 2026 its shop did not sell newborn or S sizes. Room views are worth asking about too: a December 2020 stay report said closed hotels lined up outside the window and small children may be better off not seeing them.
