A caldera lake about 43 km around, formed by an eruption 110,000 years ago.

Four islands called Nakajima sit mid-lake, and in summer the sightseeing boat lets you step ashore on Oshima.

MoreWhat kind of place

Lake Toya formed when water filled a caldera about 10 km across, left by an eruption roughly 110,000 years ago. The four Nakajima islands are lava domes pushed up from the lake bed by an eruption about 50,000 years ago.

Today the area is a UNESCO Global Geopark, with Mount Usu, which erupted in 2000, to the south of the lake.

With kidsThe part that matters

Stepping ashore on Oshima, one of the Nakajima islands, is the main event of a lake day in summer. Boats leave the hot-spring town every 30 minutes, so you can get off and take a later one.

The 45-minute forest course took one 5-year-old about 60 minutes along soft wood-chip paths, and the pier sells 100-yen fish food.

On summer nights fireworks go up over the lake, and a 2-year-old watched them open-mouthed from a hotel window. Nakajima's trails suit children who walk; a baby is better carried there.

By age0-1 / 2-3 / 4-6
  • Ages 0-1A family with a 1-year-old took a stroller aboard the boat in 2023, over an entrance step and about two stairs. The forest trails on Nakajima are uneven, so a baby carrier suits the island better than a stroller.
  • Ages 2-3A guided canoe tour on the lake worked for a 3-year-old in July 2023: one family feared their 3-year-old would be scared, yet she ended up wanting to paddle herself. That operator, Binocolo, accepted children from age 3 at that time, and shoes that can get wet are the advice.
  • Ages 4-6Nakajima suits this age when children enjoy walking: a 5-year-old stayed about two and a half hours and left delighted. A 6-year-old, though, asked to turn back within 10 minutes of setting out for a wind cave (a 30 to 40 minute round trip), so choose a shorter course if your child tires quickly.
By weatherRain, heat, cold
  • Rainy dayFireworks go ahead in the rain, though unstable wind can cancel them. For the daytime, Hokkaido's tourism site tags the Toyako Visitor Center, which shows the lake's nature in panels and specimens, as good with children and enjoyable in the rain.
  • Hot dayBring your own water and hats for the island trails. Around town, children can play barefoot on warm days in the fountain plaza's pebble channel set in the grass; the fountain ran from April 19 to September 30 in 2025, and the 2026 season is not posted.
  • Cold dayIn winter the boat still sails, hourly from 9:00 to 16:00 for about 45 minutes, but it skips Nakajima. Part of the deck was frozen on one winter sailing reported in 2019 and four or five people fell, so watch your footing on deck.
