A river gorge in northern Kofu, Yamanashi, nationally designated a Special Place of Scenic Beauty.

The walking path passes a granite peak about 180 m high, a natural stone arch and the 30 m Senga Falls.

MoreWhat kind of place

The gorge was designated a national Special Place of Scenic Beauty in 1953, and its ropeway began service on November 1, 1964. Today it is a Japan Heritage site (since 2020) and ranks first among gorges in a national top-100 list of tourist spots.

With kidsThe part that matters

Senga Falls, a 30 m drop, is the star: its spray and noise thrill adults and children alike. That sight drew an "Ooh!" from a 2-year-old seeing a big waterfall for the first time.

Besides the falls, a five-minute ropeway ride adds a summit with a bell-toss game and a drum to beat. Smaller extras add to the fun too: a crystal-toss wish game, an outdoor crystal you can touch and a crystal fountain.

Together, these make the day an outdoor adventure full of things to see, throw and touch.

By age0-1 / 2-3 / 4-6
  • Ages 0-1Plan to carry a baby in a hip seat or carrier, and keep the day short. A family with a 1-year-old not yet walking enjoyed it this way; one with a 4-month-old found a long day in a carrier too hard.
  • Ages 2-3Walk in stretches and carry on the steep parts. A 2-year-old took over an hour to dawdle down from Senga Falls to the bus stop at the path's midpoint, with plenty to see.
  • Ages 4-6The path from Senga Falls toward the stone arch has some ups and downs but is paved and well fenced, which suited a 5-year-old. A 5-year-old called the walk an adventure, though another was carried through the stone arch.
By weatherRain, heat, cold
  • Rainy dayThe gorge itself is outdoors, but there are indoor stops: a shadow-picture art museum and a free all-weather hall at the ropeway summit. After morning rain one Friday, a family in rain boots still covered the falls, the stone arch and the rock peak.
  • Hot daySummer is the cool season here: waterfall mist and tree shade made a July walk with a 2-year-old feel very cool. In summer 2018, a fenced, gentle stretch of river called Wanpaku Hiroba offered trout-grabbing and gem hunts, closing in rain or high water.
  • Cold dayWinter gives the gorge a different look, with snow on the rocks and frozen falls. Around Senga Falls it is noticeably colder, and a late-November visitor dressed warmly.
