Tokashiki is the largest of the Kerama Islands, a national park, reached by boat from Naha.

Its calm, shallow beaches face famously clear water, and sea turtles live off Tokashiku Beach.

MoreWhat kind of place

Tokashiki is the largest island of the Kerama Islands, which became a national park in March 2014. The village drew up its beach rules, including swim zones and life jackets, with residents in 2019 for Aharen and in 2020 for Tokashiku, and it keeps whale watching to short, morning-only runs so the whales are not stressed.

With kidsThe part that matters

Sea turtles off Tokashiku Beach, the island's quiet beach, are the main draw, likely to appear in the morning or evening. A family with a toddler and a school-age child spotted one and swam beside it.

At low tide the shallow bay lets small children play where their feet touch. At Aharen Beach, the popular white-sand one, one family saw small fish as soon as they waded in (August 2025).

A 5- and a 7-year-old snorkeled there in life jackets. Both suit wading, but the boat is the catch.

By age0-1 / 2-3 / 4-6
  • Ages 0-1A seated ferry suits the youngest, and a 1-year-old slept soundly through the roughly 90-minute crossing. Strollers can come aboard the ferry, and the Yellow Submarine takes children from age 0.
  • Ages 2-3Tokashiku Beach was almost empty on one late-September weekday when a 2-year-old visited, while the child-size goggles rented at Aharen Beach hurt and fogged up. On the boat, one 3-year-old would not stay put and wandered outside the seating area.
  • Ages 4-6Aharen Beach split by age: two preschoolers were frightened of the water in August 2024, while a 5- and a 7-year-old snorkeled happily in life jackets in July 2020. In August 2015, a 6-year-old who could not swim and disliked life jackets tried snorkeling with a float ring and reached the edge of the swim zone; life jackets are now required when snorkeling inside the swim zone. In another family, a 6-year-old felt very seasick on the boat back in early July.
By weatherRain, heat, cold
  • Rainy dayRain alone does not cancel the boats, and the Yellow Submarine, an underwater sightseeing boat, takes children from age 0 with no change of clothes needed. It needs at least four passengers to run, and on one late-September weekday it did not sail.
  • Hot daySunburn comes quickly: on one August visit the children, from preschool to third grade, were noticeably tanned after just a few hours. On a June visit, a parasol's shade missed one adult's outstretched feet while he napped. On the ferry, passengers who boarded late found the air-conditioned seats taken and the deck seats hot in the sun.
  • Cold daySwimming is best from April to October, so cold-season trips turn to whale watching: one morning tour a day ran from January 24 to March 8 in 2026, with life jackets required and children of elementary-school age and younger kept hand in hand. Day-trippers can join only if they arrive on the 9:00 fast boat from Tomari Port.
