An art museum in Shimane built around a Japanese garden that you view from indoors.

It holds over 120 works by painter Yokoyama Taikan, and turns a window frame into a picture frame for the garden.

MoreWhat kind of place

The museum opened in November 1970 and now holds about 2,000 works, more than 120 of them by Yokoyama Taikan. Its garden covers about 50,000 tsubo (roughly 165,000 square meters) counting the land behind it, and a 2020 article says staff clean it for about an hour before opening every morning of the year.

With kidsThe part that matters

That picture-frame window is the main event, and a visitor in 2007 found a sofa there for sitting in front of the garden.

The main building has a corner of children's illustrations (dōga) that gives little ones something of their own. One 4-year-old gazed at its cute pictures more than at the headline Japanese paintings.

The pond is another small stop: a couple with a baby and a 2-year-old found peering into it the only part the children enjoyed. Plan on a few chosen stops rather than the whole museum.

By age0-1 / 2-3 / 4-6
  • Ages 0-1Strollers can go almost everywhere inside except the small exhibition room, and the museum lends a limited number on a first-come basis.
  • Ages 2-3Keeping quiet is hard with a small child, wrote one father who brought a 3-year-old and a third-grader, but he called it a good experience. However, another family held off until their daughter was a little past 3 and knew some manners.
  • Ages 4-6One family's 4-year-old gazed at the children's illustrations, and a spot where the garden can be viewed in open air gave her a change of pace when she began to get bored. Also, another family with a 4-year-old planned to leave for the souvenir shops or lunch if the child got bored (re-entry is not allowed), and narrowed their own visit to the garden alone.
By weatherRain, heat, cold
  • Rainy dayThe garden is viewed from inside, so you can see it in the rain. On one rainy day in March 2007, a family's tired children and their father rested on the sofa facing it.
