Ibaraki with a baby (0–1) 3 spots
Ibaraki is home to the Ushiku Daibutsu — at 120 meters, the world's tallest bronze statue. An elevator carries you up to its chest, and the Oarai aquarium keeps more shark species than anywhere else in Japan. It suits kids who love big things and families who want an indoor plan in reserve.

Every gate lends a stroller for free. The loaners seat one child up to age 2, with 27 at the Central Gate, 24 at the West Gate, 10 at the Seaside Gate and 11 at the South Gate. The Seaside Train loops the park in about 40 minutes with 9 stops and costs nothing for children under 3, so if the baby falls asleep you can ride on to the next stop instead of walking. Nemophila covers the hill in April and May and kochia turns red in mid-October, changing the color of the whole slope.Loaner strollers cannot be reserved, so ask a staff member at the gate. For diaper changes, the restrooms at each parking lot and inside Pleasure Garden and Sakyu Garden have baby beds. Strollers must be folded to board the Seaside Train. Slopes are laid through the park as wheelchair routes, and a barrier-free map is published as a PDF. The park closes on Tuesdays, or the next weekday when that Tuesday is a holiday, but stays open daily through the spring, summer and autumn peaks.
Children of 3 and under pay nothing, for the statue or the garden. The chest-height observation deck 85 meters up is reached by lift, so they ride up in your arms. Inside, the Rengezo World is a golden space ringed by about 3,400 small Buddhas, where sutra chanting sounds every morning and evening. There are two tickets, and the garden-only one, 600 yen for adults and 400 for children, does not let you inside the statue; the set ticket, 900 and 500, does. Reception closes 45 minutes before the park for the set ticket and 30 minutes before for the garden ticket. Inside, the World of Light is a dark space standing for worldly desire, and when the door opens a single beam of light comes through for compassion. The place to rest is Fureai Garden Terrace, with a terrace and a lawn. Parking is free, with 820 spaces. Pets cannot be brought inside the statue or into the Pure Land garden.
One family who came with a one-year-old wrote that the trampoline worked even at that age, once the shoes came off. Out on the Lawn Plaza you can set a baby down on the grass instead of carrying them all day.The nursing spot is screened only by a partition, one family wrote, so bring a cover if you want more than that. Pack a carrier as backup, in case the loaners are gone by the time you get there.
