The driving simulator is built from the one drivers actually train on, and gives about 10 minutes of the job for 100 yen. The museum writes that you may take turns with the person you came with, so one ticket can be shared between parent and child. Mainly on weekends, the interiors of exhibited train cars are opened, and some sessions come with a short explanation from a staff member.Simulator tickets are not sold inside the museum, so buy them beforehand through Asoview or at a Seven-Eleven (the museum's FAQ for overseas visitors says online purchase is credit card only). The rail bicycle — riding the bike crews actually use to inspect track — cannot be tried by anyone under 120 cm tall, not even with a guardian along, so measure ahead and avoid an argument on the day. The museum's own pages disagree about which days it runs, so check the event calendar for your date.
On the 2nd floor, Mitette runs workshops that children and adults can both take part in, and the craft changes with the season. Jellyfish Wonder holds around 30 kinds of jellyfish and GURURI, a 360-degree panoramic tank. The Dolphin Stadium is an open 180-degree panoramic arena where the Dolphin School programme is held. And right inside the entrance, the Kyoto River area is where the giant salamander, a Special Natural Monument of Japan, greets you.The workshops have a capacity limit. The aquarium has no regular closing day, but maintenance or events can block entry, and opening hours can change with the weather. During the "Aquarium at Night" run it stays open until 20:00 and a dolphin programme also starts at 18:00. The Kyoto Railway Museum is about 5 minutes' walk away, inside the same Umekoji Park.
Ten shops stand side by side, from Sapporo miso ramen out of Hokkaido to Hakata tonkotsu out of Fukuoka, so a child can pick their own. Ramen Todai serves Tokushima tonkotsu-shoyu, with sweet-savory simmered pork belly and a raw egg; in Tokushima, eating ramen together with a bowl of white rice is the norm. The official app gives one stamp per visit to each shop, and eight stamps earn a 1,000-yen voucher.Seats cannot be reserved. A bowl runs 880 to 2,130 yen, and every shop takes credit cards, transit IC money, and QR-code payment. Toyama Black Menya Iroha has a HALAL chicken ramen (2,100 yen), and UNO RAMEN is gluten-free and vegan. UNO RAMEN also has ramen sweets such as "RAMEN CAKE" (1,500 yen).
The 2F WORKSHOP floor holds four hands-on shops. At Shichijo Kanshundo's wagashi class children make Japanese sweets themselves, and at Daiki Suisan's sushi seminar they are taught how to shape sushi. Akaneya is a traditional-crafts workshop.Daiki Suisan's sushi seminar cannot be booked on the day; advance booking only. Shichijo Kanshundo's wagashi class runs 10:00-19:00 with four sessions, at 10:00, 13:00, 15:00, and 17:00, and same-day booking is possible. Akaneya runs 10:00-19:00 (last entry 18:00), and the 2F floor is open 10:00-19:00.
