Tokyo Station

Save

Tokyo Station, in central Tokyo, runs more trains than any other station in Japan.

Inside Tokyo Station Ichibangai, Tokyo Character Street lines up character-goods shops.

MoreWhat kind of place

The red-brick Marunouchi building opened in 1914, a Renaissance-style design by the architect Kingo Tatsuno.

It was made a nationally designated Important Cultural Property in 2003, then restored to its original form in 2012.

Today about two thirds of it is the Tokyo Station Hotel, the rest station and gallery, and if you stop under the dome you can count eight of the twelve zodiac animals carved into the corners.

With kidsThe part that matters

Tokyo Character Street is lined with character and toy shops, among them the Japanese train-toy brands Plarail and Tomica.

In a 2015 travel account, the Plarail shop had its train tracks set out for play, and one family's one-and-a-half-year-old son loved it. At the Tomica shop, children pick parts and build their own toy car.

Besides the trains, a few shops keep small play corners that cost nothing.

By age0-1 / 2-3 / 4-6
  • Ages 0-1A nursing room sits inside Character Street itself, with character shops all around it, so a feed or a diaper change does not mean leaving the street — and the child waiting outside still has plenty to look at.
  • Ages 2-3Two- and three-year-olds are the most common age of child at Tokyo Station, by the visitor records of the travel site Jalan, and one two-year-old built a Tomica car of their own here in September 2022.
  • Ages 4-6A mother of two older children remembers that calm shopping was impossible at preschool age, and suggests picking a few shops rather than all of them.
By weatherRain, heat, cold
  • Rainy dayThe street runs underground and indoors, so rain never reaches it. A family with an 8-year-old and a 4-year-old found that a rainy or cold day can be filled here.
  • Hot dayIt can be very crowded, but a parent of a six-year-old still preferred it to walking around outside in August. A stroller sits low, where heat gathers, so cooling packs earn their place on the walk out to the platforms.
  • Cold dayThe same shelter works in winter: one family found it neither cold nor hot, and stayed on without buying anything.
