The kids' room on the first floor is a space of building-block cushions to play with freely, for children up to 6, somewhere to move between exhibits. Among the museum's suggested routes is one for parents and children touring the photo spots, 45 to 60 minutes long. The rooftop observation deck looks out a long way.Plan on 1.5 to 2 hours, counting the outdoor exhibits, the simulators and the theater room. Leaving room to duck into the kids' room or the baby room mid-visit keeps things calm. The 10 loaner strollers are same-day only and need a 100-yen coin, returned when you bring the stroller back. Chairs, step stools, ladders, tripods and monopods cannot be brought inside, and selfie sticks and gimbals cannot be used. The observation deck is open from opening until 30 minutes before closing and can shut in bad weather. Packed lunches are for the lawn and benches outside.
The spilled ice cream phone stand is one a preschooler can make alongside a parent (1,100 yen below elementary age), choosing vanilla, strawberry, chocolate or matcha themselves. Making it takes 20-30 minutes. Elsewhere in the house are a penny-candy shop, a table-flipping corner, and the Midget display room that looks out on the Nagaragawa Railway.For preschoolers the makeable ones are the cup ice cream and the sweets tart, both requiring a parent alongside. Those two are accepted on the day, but during Golden Week, Obon and three-day weekends no advance booking is taken at all - you sign up at the counter that day (otherwise book through Jalan or by phone, 10:00-16:00). Whoever does a workshop pays no admission; a companion who does not is charged admission, free below elementary age.
From the Seseragi Park municipal car park you cross Deai Bridge, and you are in the World Heritage village. The lawn at Ogimachi Park is a place to stretch your legs and rest. For the Ogimachi Castle Ruins viewpoint looking down over the village there is a shuttle bus, 150 yen for a child.Inside the World Heritage district drivers are asked to stay out between 9:00 and 16:00, but residents' and delivery vehicles do pass through, so hold hands on the street. The public restroom on the main street at the north end of the village (Ogimachi multipurpose hall, Ogimachi 256) has a step-free entrance, Western-style toilets and an accessible multipurpose stall, and it is free; five restrooms in the village can be used with a wheelchair. The car park runs 8:00-17:00 with last entry at 16:30.
