Koenji is a Tokyo neighborhood of 13 shopping streets, a few stops from Shinjuku.
Its Awa Odori dance festival drew 950,000 visitors in 2026, and a roofed arcade runs about 250 m from the south exit.
MoreWhat kind of place
Koenji takes its name from a temple called Koenji, about 5 to 6 minutes' walk from the south exit. The Awa Odori began in 1957 as a "baka odori" (literally a fool's dance) started by the youth group of the south-exit shopping association, now the Pal shopping street, to revive small shopping streets; today it is staged at nine performance areas around the stations.
With kidsThe part that matters
That roofed arcade, the Pal shopping street, is the easy start. It starts about 30 seconds from the south exit gate, so you stay dry in rain; bicycles may not be ridden inside.
Down the slope from the south-exit shopping street, Koenji Chuo Park has a big play structure with slides that kids love.
But when it rains, the free Children and Family Plaza offers big indoor slides and a baby-only room for 0-year-olds. So a covered street, a playground and an indoor play room make an easy outing.
By age0-1 / 2-3 / 4-6
- Ages 0-1The Plaza's first-floor baby room is reserved for 0-year-olds, so babies get a room of their own. At the Awa Odori, the organizers ask visitors not to bring strollers, and one family found a baby carrier easier in the crowd.
- Ages 2-3The Plaza's slides include ones with a mat to slow the descent, so small children can try, though a parent must stay close or slide along. But a 2021 blog found no toddler swings at Koenji Kita Park.
- Ages 4-6The Plaza's second-floor kids' room is open to children up to age 6. And a 2023 blog describes Koenji Chuo Park's play structure as having two slides, one high and one low, and enough open space for a game of tag.
By weatherRain, heat, cold
- Rainy dayRain changes little, since the Pal arcade is roofed and joined to the south exit by a covered gate, and the Plaza lets children play hard on big slides indoors. Also, the Awa Odori festival goes ahead in rain unless it is very heavy.
- Hot dayOne writer who explored Koenji on foot advises avoiding summer, but a blog describes Koenji Kita Park, a 7-minute walk north of the station, as shady and cool in summer. For water play, children at Nakano Shikinomori Park, within walking distance of a Koenji cafe, were all in swimsuits on one summer visit.
- Cold dayWinter brings seasonal events: the Pal arcade was decorated in a Japanese style from Nov 8, 2025 to Feb 7, 2026. Then the Koenji Engei Matsuri, a performing-arts festival, usually runs for a week in mid-February.

Where to go next
Where it is
Koenji is a district of Suginami Ward, Tokyo, centered on JR Koenji Station: north to Koenji-kita 1-4 and Yamato-cho/Nogata, south to Koenji-minami 1-5 and Wada/Umesato.source
Before you go
- On Saturdays, Sundays and holidays the orange Chuo Line rapid does not stop at Koenji, so ride the yellow Chuo-Sobu local line instead. Special rapid, commuter special rapid and similar trains never stop here, and if your train ends at Nakano, get off and wait for the next one.
- The Awa Odori dance festival falls on the last weekend of August (in 2026, Aug 29-30, 5 to 8 p.m.). Watching is free, and it goes ahead in rain unless the rain is very heavy. Organizers ask visitors not to come by bicycle or with a stroller because of the crowds, and traffic is restricted from 4:10 to 8:30 p.m., with the south-exit bus and taxi stops closed (use the temporary stops at the north exit).
- On festival day the platforms at the station overflow, a walk that normally takes five minutes took 15 to 20 minutes in 2017, and restroom lines were long. In past years the starting points of the Junjo and Pal venues and the second Look venue have been easier for children to see. A 2025 blogger found that arriving around 4 p.m. left time to eat, find a spot and locate restrooms, advises a spot near a corner or a wide street so you can move when a child gets bored, suggests ear plugs for the loud drums, and found a baby carrier easier than a stroller; first-aid stations are set up.
- For rainy days or tired toddlers, the Koenji Children and Family Plaza (2-52-2 Koenji-minami, a 7-minute walk from the station, no parking; its second-floor kids' room is for ages 0 to 6) is free except for paid temporary childcare, which needs registration and booking. It opens 9:00 to 18:00 on weekdays and 9:00 to 17:00 on weekends, closes on the first Sunday, holidays and year-end, and sometimes closes at short notice. Weekday mornings are quietest and weekends are busy from the morning; on its slides a parent must stay close or slide along. IMAGINUS, a science center in a closed school five minutes' walk from the station, has free entry but paid experiences from about 200 yen; some need booking, a lab took a same-day online booking in 2025, and the experiment room has a 30 to 40 minute limit.
- Nursing rooms are hard to find in Koenji, a parenting site says. The Plaza's first-floor baby room has a nursing room and a milk-preparation unit, and the Plaza also has diaper-changing space (both a lying-down table and room to change a standing child), the Machi no Eki rest area on the Junjo shopping street (north exit) has a nursing room and diaper table (2020 report), and a blogger found a nursing room at the Denny's above the station, which has an elevator for strollers. The JR station has a diaper table (location not stated) and a first-floor accessible toilet, but no stroller or baby-bed rental; one blogger writes that it has no coin lockers and suggests ecbo cloak for luggage. Drugstores right in front of the station did not stock baby food or diapers; Tsuruha (3 minutes from the south exit) and Cocokara Fine (3 minutes from the station) do.
- Two 2021 blogs raise cautions about the parks. Koenji Chuo Park (down the slope from the south-exit shopping street) faces a main road, so watch for children darting out, and the blogger found a lot of litter and pigeon droppings; at Koenji Kita Park, cigarette butts and cans lay around. Neither park's restroom had a diaper changing table, though Chuo Park has an accessible toilet. Smoking on the street is banned around the station, including inside the Pal arcade, where bicycles must be walked.
- One 2024 blogger found that lunch spots with children fill up around noon and that 1:30 to 3 p.m. was relaxed. Koenji Flat, a bakery bistro with stroller space, takes reservations, with weekend breakfast busiest. For an early start, McDonald's Koenji (north exit) opens at 5 a.m. with high chairs and a changing table in its restrooms, and the Little Mermaid bakery in the station building opens at 7:30 on weekdays and 8 on weekends.
