The lane began as stalls doing business with worshippers in the temple grounds, and until 1940 it went by the name Gokuraku-shoji. Fires in 2002 and 2003 tore through the shops around the temple.
Rebuilding under the building code would have meant a wider lane, but more than 300,000 signatures asked for it to stay as it was, and a special exemption kept the original 2.7 meters.

Pouring water is the part a child joins in. A ladle sits where you pray and a bucket waits below the Mizukake Fudo, so even a toddler can take a turn. The statue stands well back, so landing water takes a real swing.
When the bucket runs dry, a hand pump draws more for the next family. Cats fill the wait: the grounds are full of them, and the sweet shop beside the statue keeps two. Eighty meters and one small ritual, with most people done inside an hour.

Before you go
- Once you are inside Meoto Zenzai, the sweet shop beside the statue, every person at the table has to order something, and you cannot buy one bowl and share it between two.
- One order arrives as two bowls, but those two bowls are a single serving, and the shop has only about three tables, so plan on sharing a table or waiting outside.
- The lane is under 3 meters wide, and in front of that same shop it is hard even to pass someone coming the other way, with a line that can form at the statue even on an ordinary weekday. Morning is the way around it — a weekday morning has been found unexpectedly empty, and at 8:30 on a Sunday there was nobody at all.
- Credit cards are not accepted here, so carry cash for the lane and the shops.
- There is no diaper table in the yokocho itself. The nearest one listed is the 3rd floor of Round One Stadium Sennichimae, and the Namba Walk underground mall has baby beds in several of its restrooms, so change on the way rather than on arrival.
- The entrance is easy to walk straight past: the temple's stone marker stands along a shopping street, and visitors have got lost among the many street names and asked at a police box. Coming up from Namba Walk exit B16 and walking north takes about a minute.
- The ladle is not always where it should be. Ask at the temple's reception rather than give up — one visitor who could not find it did exactly that, and got her answer.
