Hokkaido in summer — 4 days from Sapporo with a 6- and 3-year-old
Four days hold one long day out, and not more than one. That day goes to the zoo in Asahikawa: about an hour and a half by limited express, then 40 minutes by bus, so nothing else is planned around it. The two days in Sapporo take one place in the morning and leave the afternoon for the hotel. Meals carry the rest — conveyor-belt sushi by the station, lamb grilled at the table, crab before the flight home.
Day 1 — Land, ride in, and eat sushi by the station
The rapid train reaches Sapporo Station in about 37 minutes. If you land with time to spare, the domestic terminal has a free aircraft museum and a play area upstairs.

No seat bookings: take a ticket from the machine by the door, scan its QR code, and wait elsewhere until LINE or email calls you. The whole party has to be there to be seated.
Day 2 — The whole day at the zoo in Asahikawa
The zoo climbs a hillside. Strollers are lent free at the gates in summer, first come first served, and a free shuttle bus runs about every ten minutes between the East Gate and the animal houses at the far end.
Day 3 — A chocolate factory in the morning, lamb and beer in the evening
Book the paid area and the sweets workshop online before you go. On the hour, the clock tower opens and its mechanical animals parade for about ten minutes.

Strollers go straight to the table without folding, and food can be served cut up small. Preschoolers eat free on the all-you-can-eat plans.
Day 4 — Crab in front of the station, then the airport
It stands in front of Sapporo Station and opens at 11:30. Booking from outside Japan means phoning the restaurant, and that is when to ask for a table with chairs.

August in Sapporo runs about 20 to 26 degrees Celsius, cooler than the rest of Japan, but the zoo is outdoors and on a slope: one family cut a summer visit to 90 minutes because of the heat. Zoo tickets can be bought in advance at convenience stores — they save you the ticket window, but they do not hold a time, and once you leave the zoo you cannot go back in. The beer garden is not booking-only, though it fills up; the course meals at Garden Grill must be booked two days ahead, and three days ahead over Obon in mid-August.
