One six-year-old spent the whole visit on the free lawn: round and round the coloured-glass spiral of Olafur Eliasson's Colour Activity House, then calling into the twelve horn-shaped tubes and getting an answer back out of a different one, connected underground. The Kids Studio runs hands-on making programs on Saturdays and Sundays, 13:00-16:00, open to children and adults alike, with preschoolers accompanied by a parent.Preschoolers view for free, but seeing Leandro Erlich's Swimming Pool requires a ticket to the main exhibition. Going down into its underground half also needs a timed-entry booking on the official website; the view from above needs the ticket but no time slot. There are fourteen galleries, no two the same in size, height or shape. Reckon on about 30 minutes for the free Public Zone and 30-45 minutes per exhibition. The Exhibition Zone is open 10:00-18:00, until 20:00 on Fridays and Saturdays, and closed Mondays. Weekdays, and holidays after about 15:00, tend to be calmer; with Friday and Saturday opening until 20:00, after 17:00 is the unhurried slot. The museum does not offer guided tours.
Eleven halls hold more than a hundred activities to choose from: soba making, paper making, Wajima lacquer chinkin engraving, Kanazawa gold leaf work, glass blowing, sandblasting, Yamanaka lacquer maki-e, assembling and painting and decorating a music box, bamboo craft, ceramic tiles, hand-built pottery, herbariums, mosaic candles and aroma sachets. In Yuzen stencil dyeing you pick a design for a handkerchief or a placemat and paint through the stencil; iron it afterward and the color survives the wash. The play equipment in the Children's Square is for ages from toddler through elementary school.Individuals do not book; you sign up at each hall on the day. The one-day entry fee for children aged 4 and up is 330 yen, changing to 400 yen on October 1, 2026. The official ticket site advertises an 18% online-only discount, so the gate price and the advance price differ. Kutani work ships later, about two months for painting and about six for the wheel, postage extra and no overseas shipping. In August 2026 glass blowing, both the workshop and the demonstration, is on a closed schedule, though the Glass Craft Hall itself is open. One record covered three of the eleven halls, washi paper, gold leaf and sweets, in a two-hour visit.
On the second floor, Insects of Ishikawa arranges the prefecture's representative insects by habitat, with touch panels children work themselves. Rarities on show include the Sharp's diving beetle, called the phantom diving beetle, and the anchor tiger beetle; at the information corner children look them up in books and on computers.Admission is free under elementary-school age, 200 yen for elementary to high-school students and 410 yen for adults. On Children's Day (5 May) and on the 19th of every month, the prefecture's child-raising day, junior-high age and under enter free — the 19th applies to family visits only, and when it falls on a Tuesday the museum is closed. Tuesday is the regular closing day, but the Tuesdays between 20 July and 31 August and during Golden Week are open.
