Ameyoko Shopping Street
savetrip ideasThe noise and the crush are the attraction, not a side effect.
A post-war black market grew into this street, and some four hundred shops now pack the stretch between Ueno and Okachimachi stations. The main street is six meters wide with goods set out on both sides, and the association itself calls the place a maze. Year-end crowds are heavy enough that the shopkeepers run their own crowd patrol. Calls to passing shoppers fly across the street, and the Ameyoko Center Building keeps a vending machine of cricket snacks.
